             1) Vasco the gama was a portuguese expoler who made the first EUROPEAN sea voyage to reach india by salling around the cape of good hope.da gama was the third son of estevo da gama ,a minor provincial nobleman who was commander of the fortress of sines on the cost of alentejo province in southwestern portugal.

2) littel is known of his early life .in 1492 king john two of portugal sent him to the port of setubal,south of lisbon and the algrave.

3) portugal's southernmost province to seize french ships in retaliation  for french peacetime depredations against portuguese shipping a task that da gama rapidaly and effectively performed.

in 1495 king manuel ascended to the throme.

4) The balance of power between factions at the portuguese court shifted in favour of friends and patrons of the da gama family.simultaneously a neglected project was recived to send protuguese fleet to india to open the sea route to asia and to outflank the muslims who had hitherto enjoyed a monopoly of trade with india and other eastern states.for unknown reasons da gama who had littel relevant experiance was appointed to lead the expedition.

5) Da gama sailed from lisbon on july 8,1497 with a fleet of foure vessels two medium sized  three masted sailing ships, each of about 120 tons named the sao gabriel and the sao rafael, a50 tons caravel ,named the berrio and a 200 ton storeship with da gama's fleet went three interpreters  two arabic speakers and one spoke several bantu dailects. the fleet also carried padroes (stone pillers) to set up as marks of discovery.

6) passing the canary islands on july 15 the fleet reached sao tiago(santiago) in the cape verde island on the 26th  remainnig there the currents of the gulf of guinea da gama undretook a long detour through the south atlantic before attemptting to round the cape of good hope.the fleet reached santa helena ba(in modern south africa ) on november 7 unfavourable winds and the adverse current delayed the rounding of the cape of good hope until november 22.

7) Goa - The name in the later vedic perod (c.1000-500 BC) when the hindu epic "mahabharat" was written goa has been referred to with sanskrit name "gomantak" a word with many meanings, signifying mostly a fertile land ; but however it is the portuguese who gave goa it's name.

8) The state of goa in india is famous for it's beaches and places of worship.tourism is it's primary industry and is generally focused on the coastal areas of goa, with decreased tourist activity inland.

9)from the earlier part of the 15th century portuguese expedition's organised by prince henry the navigator had been reaching down the african coastline principally in search of west africa riches notably, gold and slaves.

10) They had greatly extended portuguese maritime knowledge but had littel profit to show for the effort. 

11)After henry's death in 1460, the portuguese crown showed littel interest in continuing this effort andin 1469.

12)Licensed the neglected african enterprise to a private lisbon merchant consortium led by fernao Gomes.within a few years Gome" captions expanded portuguese knowledge across the gulf of guinea doing business in gold dust melegueta pepper'ivory and sub-saharan slaves.when gomes charter came up for renewal in 1474.
